2012-W American Silver Eagle Uncirculated Coin

2012-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle starting sales were 123,801

Coin sales from the United States Mint revealed that opening demand was not as strong for the 2012-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle as it was last September for the 2011-dated issue.

The U.S. Mint reported 123,801 of the new Silver Eagles were purchased between launching on Thursday, August 2, and Monday, August 6. Last year’s initial five-day sales, however, hit 184,967. (Read about the Eagle’s release.)

A possible justification for the 61,000 difference would be higher anticipation for the 2011 strike following the uncirculated’s suspension in 2009 and 2010. Another possibility would be all of the attention that silver was getting last September when the market price was $40.34 an ounce on the London Fix compared to the milder price of $27.42 an ounce around the launch time of the 2012 Eagle.

As for other American Silver Eagles, their weekly increases were solid, but not overly impressive. 2012-W Proof Silver Eagles added 21,288 to their total versus 34,061 in the previous round, and the bullion Silver Eagles gained 765,000 following an advance of 810,000. Year-to-date sales for the collector proof clocked in at 548,094, and the investor-targeted bullion Eagles crossed 20M by ending up at 20,435,000.

There was one overachiever though, and it was the 2011-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle. It climbed by 655 in this report after rising 330 in the last. Its new total hit 298,284.
