2013 Proof Silver Eagle Demand Up, Coin Sales Mostly Lower

Demand fell for most silver coin products, United States Mint sales stats revealed. Buying grew for the 2013-W Proof Silver Eagle though, and it was weekly best-selling silver numismatic product at the U.S. Mint.

Sales of the proof Silver Eagle jumped 9,071 after rising 6,042 in the prior week. With the latest advance, the new grand total for the coin hit 577,226.

Collectors refrained from purchasing too many more 2013 Silver Proof Sets. At this time, each set sells for $60.95, which is $7 lower than when it debuted on May 2, but 4,517 were ordered in this round compared to 5,665 previously. Half of the coins contained within this annual set are composed of 90% fine silver.

Then, as the third best seller for the U.S. Mint, the 2013-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle gained 3,725 to hit 122,566 overall. A week earlier collectors scooped up 2,692. The uncirculated Silver Eagle is the newest of the three top sellers, having been in the market since May 28.

For the most part, sales increases for other silver coins and silver products were significantly lower than the prior week as they were surely pressured by weakness in silver. In fact, expect next week’s sales report to show some slowing as silver prices have been plunging. While numismatic products always carry significant premiums above their melt values, collectors do pay attention to large movements in silver and tend to hold off in buying when silver goes down significantly and prices for silver coin products stay unchanged. As things stand now, the U.S. Mint is considering lowering its prices, but that could take time.
