2014 Silver Eagle Coin Sales Pendulum

It is common for American Silver Eagles to be big movers in U.S. Mint’s sales stats, but in the latest report, sales of numismatic proof and uncirculated versions swung to opposite sides of the pendulum.

Leading the pack, this time, was the 2014 Uncirculated Silver Eagle. Collectors took in 9,260 of the uncirculated coins, moving their total up to 172,106. Such a jump is out of the ordinary in this stage of their release and during the summer. To put it in perspective, only 1,146 sold in the previous round, and it has been two months since the last time the silver coin’s sales surged by more than 9,000 in a single week.

As for 2014 Proof Silver Eagles, their numbers uncharacteristically fell by 6,108 which changed their total to 617,728. In the prior round, their weekly sales advanced by 17,235. Returns and order cancellations are common reasons for a weekly decline, as are routine auditing and adjustments. But amounts rarely stack above the 6,000 level.

On the investor front, bullion Silver Eagles continued their rise. U.S. Mint authorized purchasers placed orders for 645,000 more compared to 560,000 one week earlier. The latest move puts the July number at 1,640,000.
