2016 Shawnee Silver Coin Debut Sales, Silver Eagles Hit 10.7M

Initial sales of the 2016-P Shawnee National Forest Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins reached 15,263 between their debut on Thursday, Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb. 28, per United States Mint sales stats.

This collectible, three-inch, silver coin is the first of five for 2016 and the 31st in the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin series. (More details here.) Its investor quality counterpart, being sold in the bullion market, already hit sales of 105,000 since its launch on Feb. 1.
Also showing strong sales were bullion American Silver Eagles, with a total of 4,782,000 for February. The month went down in the record books as the strongest February sales ever, and overtook the 11th best month overall since the Silver Eagles debuted in 1986.
Bullion Silver Eagles continue under an allocation policy. This week, the Mint set their limit at 1 million coins. The Mint’s bullion distributors ordered 73.7% of them on Monday, leaving 263,500 left for the week. At the time of this writing, the U.S. Mint had not reported any sales for March. Their January through February total is 10,736,500 coins, keeping them on pace to top last year’s record of 47 million coins.
Commemorative 2016 Mark Twain Silver Dollars underwent a price change of $5 each when their introductory prices ended March 2 at 3PM ET. At present the proof dollar is $50.95 and the uncirculated is $49.95.
Most of the time, proof commemoratives outsell uncirculated, but for the latest round of US Mint figures, 2016 Mark Twain Uncirculated Silver Coins spiked by 1,079 while the proofs climbed by 966. Cumulative totals for the two strikes still have the proofs ahead 48,362 to 18,759.
