9/11 Silver Medal Sales Debut

Although silver coin sales for the United States Mint slowed overall, a few standouts were revealed in the latest figures. The new 9/11 Silver Medals brought in almost $3 million in sales, and the 2010-P Yosemite National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins reached their maximum order limit so a waiting list is now in place.

Besides coins, the US Mint releases several new medals each year, and the latest one will touch the heart of many Americans. The 9/11 Silver Medal launched on Monday, June 20, and already 50,998 sold in the first week. Both the Philadelphia and West Point mint facilities are producing the medals. Buyers took in 33,046 that bear the "W" mintmark and 17,952 with the "P" mintmark. Each costs $56.95, so the US Mint registered total sales of $2,904,336.

Each 9/11 Silver Medal includes a $10 surcharge to help support the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. To date, the not-for-profit organization will receive funds from the US Mint of more than $500,000. The medals may be purchased directly from the US Mint website at http://catalog.usmint.gov/ or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). The 9/11 Silver Medal price will go up to $66.95 (+$10) after 5:00 p.m. (ET), on August 18, 2011.

Collectors toward the end of last week also placed the last 3,896 orders for the Yosemite Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, which triggered an unofficial sell out and a "waiting list" for any new order. The waiting list ensures all 27,000 five ounce coins will sell, should any of the previous orders be cancelled. The official sell out is expected at any moment now.

Availability of the Grand Canyon five ounce uncirculated coin started at noon Wednesday, and the opening results will be posted as soon as they are announced.

As for US Mint sets, demand was down for all except the 2010 America the Beautiful Silver Quarters Set which gained 421 compared to 311 previously. The most popular was still the 2011 Silver Proof Set with an addition of 2,509 in sales. The 2011 silver quarters set was next with a jump of 1,026.

One commemorative coin also rallied for an improved week-over-week sales figure. The others eased. The overachiever was also the leader, the proof Medal of Honor dollar. Collectors picked up 853 in this round versus 747 in the last. The next highest seller was the proof US Army dollar with 546 followed by the uncirculated Medal of Honor, which rose by 136. The uncirculated US Army dollar advanced 124.

Purchases of the bullion 2011 American Silver Eagles, on the other hand, did not slow. 883,500 were bought over the last seven days compared to 808,500 coins in the prior report. The latest addition moved June’s total up to 3,374,000 and promoted the month to the third highest record for 2011. The annual total rang in at 22,275,500.

As for the Vicksburg National Military Park bullion coin that launched on Monday, June 20, the US Mint sales report showed 19,000 sold.
