9/11 Silver Medal

Three silver products erupted in the latest batch of U.S. Mint weekly sales stats. The best performer was the 2012 Proof Silver Eagle coin, but the most notable was the 9/11 Silver Medal from West Point. The third, which was a Star-Spangled Banner silver dollar, was less jaw-dropping but still a nice jolt in sales.

Issued on April 12, the 2012 Proof Silver Eagle is expected to lead, but the latest increase was nearly 4,000 more than the prior round. 14,449 were purchased compared to 10,490 previously. The new total hit 381,725.

The second most popular item, surprisingly, was the West Point produced 9/11 Silver Medal which launched last June. It topped 100,000 in sales when 2,660 were recently ordered. Prior weekly increases had been averaging around 151 all year, and in the previous report sales of the medals from West Point fell by 33. The last time 2,000 or more of the "W" medals sold in just one week was September of 2011.

The latest gain for the Philadelphia minted 9/11 Silver Medal was 455. It sales stand at 64,530. The only difference between it and the West Point version are the two differing mint marks — "W" or "P."

Demand for the uncirculated Star-Spangled Banner silver dollar jumped by 717 after adding 314 in the prior round, and it was the only 2012 commemorative to outperform. More than a month had passed since the last time the uncirculated version advanced by more than 700 in a week. Its latest total clocked in at 33,514 while the total for the individual proof Star-Spangled Banner silver dollar landed at 86,973.

May is turning out to be a pretty good month for bullion American Silver Eagles. With another 707,500 purchased, the latest total rung in at 2,117,500 and became the third best month of 2012 while more than a week is left. So far this year, the United States Mint Authorized Purchasers (AP’s) have ordered 13,776,500 Silver Eagles.
