2012 Silver Proof Set

2012 Silver Proof Set

While sales of nearly every silver numismatic product was higher, it was the debut of the 2012 Silver Proof Set that topped them all with a starting figure of 189,628 in its first week on the chart.

The U.S. Mint launched this year’s annual set on Monday, June 4, 2012, and 189,628 were picked up by collectors by the following Monday. Compared to the inaugural sales of the 2011 Silver Proof Set, which opened with 209,367 between its issue date of January 25 and January 30, though, sales were considerably slower.

One reason for the slowdown of the 2012 Silver Proof Set opener may have been its competition with the 2012-S American Silver Eagle Two-Coin Set released on Thursday, June 7. Its first day sales were 85,341 and by Monday, June 11 they were 115,059. Today, per the set’s sales odometer posted on the U.S. Mint’s product page, sales stand at 125,371. With the Silver Proof Set pricing of $67.95 and the Silver Eagle Two-Coin Set pricing at $149.95, the new releases were a bit hard on the pocket book but very good for the government’s revenue.

On the other hand, the two new debuts seemed to have helped boost sales for several other products, including the individual 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle. Its weekly increase surged 27,301 in this round after gaining 9,527 previously. They placed third among the top sellers.

Jumping back into the limelight were the bullion Silver Eagles. After a rather slow week in the last report, sales picked back up in this one. June’s total rose by 931,500 and is now at 1,121,500. The year-to-date total is 15,655,500.
