2011-W American Silver Eagle Uncirculated Coin

The United States Mint lowered the prices for its numismatic silver coins on Tuesday, December 27. Products reduced in price include the uncirculated Silver Eagle and four America the Beautiful 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins. Prices for the Mint’s annual sets, however, were untouched.

The last United States Mint price adjustments on these coins occurred on October 7, 2011 after the white metal fell from the $40 an ounce level toward $30.

Apparently, what brought on the reductions was again steadily lower silver prices. The metal’s London fixing has remained under $30 an ounce since December 14, and its latest weekly average was $29.26. The current spot price of silver in New York is $28.63, at the time of this writing. It should be noted no gold or silver fixings were set on the 26th and 27th due to UK bank holidays associated with Christmas and Boxing Day.

In this round, sales of the silver issues were quietly adjusted without long term suspensions. The products experiencing the most significant price decrease were the America the Beautiful 5 ounce coins, falling $25 each. The uncirculated Silver Eagle was reduced by $5. The table below shows past and current prices for major numismatic silver products offered by the Mint.

The last time the United States Mint adjusted prices for its annual sets was in March 2011 when amounts were raised due to higher precious metals. The cost of the silver-related 2010 proof set, the 2010 quarters set and the 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters set were raised by $8, $7, and $2 respectively. At that time, one ounce of the precious white metal was valued at more than $36. The reluctance to reduce these products may be due to the fact that the 2010 issues have only three days of availability left. According to the Mint’s Last Opportunity online page, sales will end for the 2010 sets on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 5:00 PM ET.

As for the commemorative 2011 September 11 National Medals, which is struck from the same blank as the uncirculated Silver Eagle, they are still $66.95. Their prices have not changed since August 18 when their introductory price of $56.95 expired.
