To kickoff the year, the United States Mint launched the first set of two commemorative coins. On Thursday, January 2, the 2014-P Civil Rights Act of 1964 Silver Dollars debuted, and by Sunday, January 5, their sales tallied 14,480. The second set of commemoratives, honoring the National Baseball Hall of Fame, will launch later in 2014.

Broken out, the enhanced proof Civil Rights Act of 1964 Silver Dollars outsold the uncirculated version 10,056 to 4,424. This proportionality is not unusual, since the uncirculated commemoratives typically end up with lower mintages based on consumer demand. Ratios this time, however, may wind up with a more dramatic spread considering the uniquely polished and lasered finishes that have been applied to the proof coins.

Becoming available so early in the year may have skewed demand from silver coin collectors. The U.S. Mint is allowed by law to sell these coins until late December, if orders do not max out at 350,000 across both offerings before then.

Inaugural sales of the Civil Rights Act Silver Dollars fall very short of the stronger opening numbers of other past commemoratives. Most recently, when the 2013 Girl Scouts Silver Dollars debuted last February, orders totaled 41,624 from the proof and uncirculated strikes. Buyers also sought out 22,398 of the 2013 5-Star Generals Silver Dollars during their initial weekend in March. (Read this coin news article for more detailed breakdowns going back to commemorative silver coins released since 2010.)

The comparison, it should be noted, is not equal. One aberration between the initial totals is that the reporting period of the Civil Rights coins was four days, and for the 2013 commemoratives it was five days.

Sales will likely pick up over the next few weeks, before the cost of the new coins rise by $5. Right now, the proof silver dollars are $49.95 and the uncirculated are $44.95. Prices are scheduled to increase after 3 p.m. on Feb. 3, 2014.
