Silver Soars to $19.95, Hits Highest Price Since 2008

Weekly Silver UpdateU.S. silver prices on Friday closed at their highest level since March 2008, capping two straight weeks of gains. The metal soared 4.8% this week in New York after surging 5.8% last week.

Silver as "the poor man’s gold" easily outperformed the yellow metal. In fact, the gold to silver ratio is at the lowest point since May, with 62.7 ounces of silver now needed to buy one ounce of gold. That compares to last week’s ratio of 65.02.

On Friday, December silver finished at $19.949 an ounce on the Comex in New York. It reached an intraday high earlier in the day of $19.985 an ounce. Read More…

US Mint Sales: 2010 Silver Proof Sets at 241K in Four Days

US Mint silver coin salesIt was another good week for silver numismatic products. The United States Mint launched a new coin set which likely helped its other products, as each outperformed its previous week’s sales growth. Even the bullion silver eagles gained some steam.

The Mint’s annual 2010 Silver Proof Set was released Thursday, August 26. By Sunday, 241,656 were scooped up by eager buyers. When compared to last year’s inaugural sales of 271,372, this year’s start was slower. Last year’s set, however, had four extra coins, including Lincoln’s Bicentennial Cents, and was $4 cheaper. Star Spangled Banner Silver DollarsA newly passed law will help celebrate the bicentennial writing of the Star-Spangled Banner with commemorative gold and silver coins.

The United States Mint will strike up to 500,000 Star Spangled Banner Silver Dollars and a maximum of 100,000 $5 gold commemoratives for issue during the calendar year beginning on January 1, 2012.

The Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Act was introduced as H.R. 2097 in the U.S. House by Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger on April 23, 2009. It passed in the House on September 9, 2009, and then in the Senate on August 2, 2010. President Obama signed the Act into Public Law 111-232 on August 16, 2010. Read More…

Silver Prices Soar for Week, Silver Eagles Top 23M

Weekly Silver UpdateSilver prices rallied this week in New York and London, with respective weekly gains of 5.8% and 4.9%.

U.S. silver tracked gold and joined with increases in other precious metals, breaking a two-week losing streak. With the exception of a 4.4 cent dip on Thursday, silver moved higher each day since last week’s close.

On Friday, September silver finished at $19.039 an ounce on the Comex in New York — its best closing price this week. It reached an intraday high earlier in the day of $19.340 an ounce. Read More…

US Mint 2010 Silver Proof Set

The 14-coin US Mint 2010 Silver Proof Set launched Thursday, August 26, 2010, at noon Eastern time. The annual silver set is priced at $56.95 and will do very well, since it is an always popular product for coin collectors.

The United States Mint has been selling approximately 700,000 of the sets since 2008. Each of those years, they were launched during the middle of the summer and sold into the following year.

US Mint silver coin salesSales picked up for silver coin products, according to the latest round of United States Mint sales figures. Every numismatic item exceeded its prior weekly gains, following two weeks of slower movement.

The 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set jumped by 4,884 compared to 4,695 previously. Last year’s 2009 DC and Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set also bounced up by 726, as compared to the prior climb of 621. Read More…
