2010 kicks off a new series of quarters that will celebrate US national parks and national sites. The program of America the Beautiful Quarters will feature five rotating reverse designs each year until at least 2021.

In addition to the quarter-dollars, the United States Mint will also issue bullion five-ounce, .999 fine silver coins with designs that are duplicates of the quarters. The bullion coins will obviously be larger due to their weight. Their three inch diameter will actually make them double the size of early US silver coins, like the Morgan silver dollars.

The fourth quarter issued next year will commemorate the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Companion to it and also honoring the site will be the 2010 Grand Canyon National Park Silver Bullion Coin.

The US Mint has already created four differing coin design candidates emblematic of the park. These were submitted to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and the United States Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) — organizations tasked to review US coinage and medals designs and offer their recommendations to the Secretary of the Treasury, who is ultimately responsible for the final selection. The Yellowstone National Park Quarter will be the second quarter-dollar issued next year as a part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. Accompanying it to help celebrate the historic park in Wyoming will be a silver coin with a duplicate design, but much larger in size.

The 2010 Yellowstone National Park Silver Bullion Coin will be struck in five ounces of .999 fine silver and have a three inch diameter. That is double the size of early US silver coins, like the Peace Dollars, and nearly twice that of today’s one-ounce American Eagle Silver, which is 1.598 inches in diameter.

Coin designs have already been created for the 2010 quarters, and therefore also for the silver bullion versions. Three designs were created by the United States Mint that are emblematic of Yellowstone National Park.

As a part of the minting process, these candidates were submitted to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and the United States Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) for review. Read More…

Weekly Silver UpdateIn a continuation of the seesaw silver prices we discussed last Saturday, a fresh rally has tilted silver significantly higher — to the tune of weekly gains of 5.8 percent in London and 6.9 percent in New York.

New York silver futures for December delivery closed to $17.375 an ounce on Friday, dipping 3.5 cents. However, the metal still soared $1.12 higher on the week.

London silver was set to $17.525 an ounce, jumping 95 cents on the week. The metal retreated on Tuesday to $16.35, but quickly recovered with successive daily gains through to week’s end. London silver is up $6.735, or 62.4 percent this year.

"Silver has proven itself, time and again, to be a safe haven for investors during times of economic uncertainty and, as such, with the current economy in difficulty the silver market has become a flight to quality investment vehicle," writes Lorimer Wilson on SilverSeek.com in an article entitled Current Gold:Silver Ratio Screams: Buy All Things Silver! "Silver has considerable upside potential short term (to $22), medium term (to $32) and long term (to $51 and beyond)."

"I believe we are about to see some temporary carnage in the stock and commodities markets, and that will deeply affect silver prices," writes Avery Goodman on Seeking Alpha in an article entitled Silver Prices Are About to Fall. "I may be overly pessimistic, but, based on charts I’ve examined, the way I see things, silver prices could temporarily fall to $11 per troy, again, or even lower, before March 2010."
