Another sales milestone is close for a popular United States Mint silver product. 199,848 orders have been placed for the 2011 Silver Eagle uncirculated coin between its launch on September 15 and November 28, leaving the coin’s total just 152 away from an even 200,000.

The latest US Mint weekly sales report showed buyers scooped up 5,142 of the uncirculated coin, which was higher than the 2,784 purchased in the prior week. It had been more than a month since the last time over 5,000 were bought in a single week.

Still, the uncirculated Eagle’s 2011 tally is much lower than the number sold in 2008. Back then, the coin was only $19.95 and 436,702 coins sold. Today the price is $50.95. The US Mint did not produce a Silver Eagle uncirculated coin in 2009 or 2010.

The only numismatic item to sell more than the Silver Eagle was the Silver Proof Set. Collectors bought 7,306 sets, up from the 6,687 that sold in the previous round. Perhaps additional gift-buying for the upcoming holidays is boosting sales.

November is coming to an end, and it looks like it will be the slowest month of the year for bullion sales of American Silver Eagles. The US Mint’s network of Authorized Purchasers have only taken in 1,284,000 Eagles as of Tuesday. In contrast, 2011 has been on fire in terms of record sales, having surpassed 2010’s record already. The current year-to-date total is up to 37,759,500.
