US Mint Sales: 2011 Silver Eagle Fever Nears 20 Million

2011 American Silver Eagle Bullion Coin

Collectors purchased fewer numismatic silver coins, the latest United States Mint weekly sales stats showed, but it revealed robust figures for 2011 Silver Eagle bullion coins. In fact the only two products that exceeded their prior sales increases were the Silver Eagle coins and the 2011 America the Beautiful Silver Quarters Set.

The bullion Silver Eagle just finished their fourth best month ever and already started June with the same fever. The US Mint sold 817,000 to their small group of authorized buyers, a higher number than what has been seen since February and significantly higher than last week’s 654,500. The San Francisco Mint may have played some role in the more generous allocation across the buyers since it is now producing the bullion coins along with the West Point Mint. But in any case, the 2011 Silver Eagle is approaching 20 million in sales this year, and will achieve the milestone by this week or early next. That puts the coins on track for a more than 40 million year, easily topping last year’s 34.6 million record.

Action was weaker for numismatic coins and was somewhat expected since last Monday was a holiday. The set that has been driving most of the demand remained the top seller once again. The 2011 Silver Proof Set took in 4,334 in sales versus 4,909 previously. As mentioned earlier, the 2011 America the Beautiful Silver Quarters Set was the only overachiever, pulling in 2,243 compared to its prior 2,190 addition.

The commemorative coins struggled in this round. The US Army Silver Dollars dominated while both Medal of Honor Silver Dollars ended down. Starting with the Army coins which grew by 757, the proofs climbed the most with 578 while the uncirculated rose by 179. The Medal of Honor coins cumulative loss was -323. Its proof and uncirculated dollars fell by -259 and -64, respectively.

The latest status of the Olympic National Park Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin was not mentioned in the Mint’s report. At last count, 73,400 of the allotted 126,700 had sold by May 26. All seven of the prior 5 ounce bullion coins sold out, but the Olympic coin’s timeline is presently a mystery.
