US Mint Sales: Silver Coins and Sets Top Sellers, Infantry Dollars Led

March 1, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

US Mint sales slowed for nearly all silver coins and sets, but data also shows that those same silver coins and sets were in most demand as one or the other appeared seven times in a list of top ten weekly sellers.

Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar Defenders of Freedom Set

Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar products, including the Defenders of Freedom Set, held the top three spots for best US Mint sellers.

2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollars and the Defenders of Freedom Set still led the pack by taking the top three positions, and the 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set the 2011-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagles raced to take the fourth and fifth place for highest sales. And recall, the uncirculated Eagle had its sales hindered as it was among the silver coins that the US Mint suspended Friday.

During the first full week on the market, collectors bought another 24,554 2012 Infantry Silver Dollars, and their preferences mimicked opening sales. The individual proof coins were the favorite by a wide spread, with 11,551 more ordered, and then came the Defenders of Freedom Set which also showcases a proof strike. 7,184 sets were scooped up this time, bringing the total number of sets remaining to 26,594. The uncirculated Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar again followed with sales of 5,819.

Sales of the 2011-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle and the 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set were pretty close, but demand for the quarters set was slightly better. Silver enthusiasts nabbed 2,725 of the quarters set and 2,377 of the Eagles. Previously, their weekly increases were 3,101 and 3,518.

America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins were also suspended Friday. They were likely hurt the most although the Chickasaw coin still advanced a healthy 2,078 to a total of 10,736 during what would have been its second full week of availability has the suspension not cut into its sales. The coin was the Mint’s 7th best numismatic seller for the week.

Bullion Silver Eagles gained another 240,000 between last Thursday and Wednesday. The new monthly total cracked 1,490,000 and the latest annual number came to 7,597,000.
