US Mint Sales: Silver Proof Set Approaches Milestone

Sales numbers from the United States Mint revealed a slightly slower week for all but one silver product, the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle, which was also the sales leader. Demand gently tapered for the Uncirculated Silver Eagle, while the 2011 Silver Proof Set is quickly closing in on a new milestone.

Collectors nudged Silver Proof Set sales up by 5,789 after taking in 6,766 in the previous week. The new total landed at 493,708 and was only shy of the 500K milestone by 6,292. November has been a strong sales month for the set, and hitting the milestone will likely happen before it ends.

As for the Proof and Uncirculated American Silver Eagles, the former added an impressive 18,011 to its total, and the latter picked up 4,112. In the prior round they rose by 17,701 and 4,767.

It is hard to say if November will be another strong month for the bullion Silver Eagle coins. From Thursday to Wednesday, US Mint authorized buyers picked up 253,000 coins, leaving the mid-month level fewer than one million at 819,000. Judging from the current sales pace, the odds of topping last year’s November record of 4.26 million are looking slim to none.
