US Mint Silver Sales: Truman Set Sells Out

This week was exciting for coin collectors and June was a very busy month for the United States Mint’s bullion American Silver Eagles. To the latter first, the month ended with the second highest monthly total this year: 4,840,000 coins. June trailed only January’s sales, which finished at 5,530,000.

To add perspective to the recent high demand for Silver Eagles, June’s sales doubled the 2,023,500 that were sold last month, and it surpassed June 2014’s figure of 2,692,000. At least a small part of the success was the U.S. Mint’s ending of their sales rationing on June 1. The tipping point, however, came on Monday, June 29, when 1.15 million of the 99.9% fine silver coins were ordered. It was the highest daily surge since the 2015 bullion Silver Eagles launched on Jan. 12.
For collector, the newest U.S. Mint product with silver hit the market and sold out in minutes. The 2015 Harry S. Truman Coin and Chronicles Set debuted on Tuesday, June 30, with a product limit of 17,000 and a per household ordering limit of five. Adam Stump, deputy director of the U.S. Mint’s Office of Corporate Communications, said 16,780 of the possible 17,000 sold in approximately 15 minutes. He added that all inventory is shipping on a "first-in, first-served basis" and that "no additional inventory will be produced."
The set contains a unique reverse proof $1 coin honoring Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States, as well as a one-ounce 99.9% fine Harry S. Truman silver medal, both from Philadelphia. It also has a 1973 U.S. 8-cent postage stamp bearing his image and a booklet that chronicles his life. The set was priced at $57.95.
