Another addition to the popular annual silver koala series is available today. The Perth Mint of Australia began selling its 2012 Australian Koala High Relief Silver Coin.
Limited to a mintage of 10,000, the 99.9% pure silver coin comes in one troy ounce. It is legal tender under the Australian Currency Act of 1965 with an assigned face value of $1.
Designs on the 2012 Australian Koala High Relief Silver Coin are the same as other 2012-dated koala coins, with an adult koala sleeping on the branch of a eucalyptus tree. The reverse was designed by Perth Mint artist Aleysha Howarth and the obverse effigy of Queen Elizabeth II was by Ian Rank-Broadley.
Contrasted from other koala coins, the Perth Mint has reduced the high relief coin’s diameter to make it thicker and the obverse and reverse have a concave surface to dramatically enhance the scene. Using this same process, earlier this year high reliefs were released that depict a kangaroo and kookaburra.
Reverse inscriptions include AUSTRALIAN KOALA, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mint mark, 2012, and 1 oz 999 SILVER. On the obverse are the words ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1 DOLLAR.
Each 2012 Australian Koala High Relief Silver Coin is held within a black presentation case and illustrated shipper and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
