2013-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle Tops US Mint Sales in Start

Silver coin enthusiasts went after the new 2013-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle, according to sales stats from the United States Mint.

The silver coins went on sale Tuesday, May 28, and by Monday, June 3, collectors picked up 104,570 of them. (To learn about the coin’s release and availability, read this article.)

Their start was solid, but not as impressive as the opening numbers for the annual coin in the previous two years. In 2012, buyers scooped up 123,801 between a Thursday to Monday selling period last August, and starting sales for the 2011 edition were 184,967 during the month of September.

Competing with it was the individual 2013-W American Silver Eagle Proof Coin, whose sales are still going strong. Its total advanced by 15,252 in this report. To date, 554,063 have sold.

Another silver product that certainly interfered with the new release was the 2013 American Silver Eagle West Point Two-Coin Set. Orders over the weekend increased 8,521. By Tuesday they gained 1,878 and by Wednesday they jumped 9,848. About two hours before its scheduled sales conclusion on Thursday, the U.S. Mint reported another 8,469 sold to bring the unit total to 251,695. That number is expected to change due to returns, cancellations, problem orders and a final audit.

2013 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets hit the 100,000 milestone in this latest round. Collectors added 1,091 of the sets to the sales chart below, bringing their total to 100,417.
