American Eagle Silver Bullion Coins Sales Set Records

Sales of 2009 American Eagle Silver Bullion Coins have set a new record with more than 4 million purchased in Jan. and Feb., according to the latest United States Mint sales figures.

The Mint sold 1.9 million eagle silver bullion coins in Jan., making it the second best beginning month for a new year (after Jan. 2008), and 2.125 million last month, marking the most sold in any given Feb. since the coins were launched in 1986.
Combined, the trend is truly unprecedented, and highlights the US Mint statement explaining why the companion collector versions are on hold. Here is a portion of that statement:
Production of United States Mint American Eagle Silver Proof and Uncirculated Coins has been temporarily suspended because of unprecedented demand for American Eagle Silver Bullion Coins. Currently, all available silver bullion blanks are being allocated to the American Eagle Silver Bullion Coin Program, as the United States Mint is required by Public Law 99-61 to produce these coins "in quantities sufficient to meet public demand . . . ."
When consideration is given to the more than 19.5 million bullion silver eagles sold in 2008 and the already impressive start to this year, the Mint could very well have its most demanding year ever for producing silver coins.
The table of US Mint sales in Jan. and Feb. and from 2000-2009 follows:
