Buyers found no Black Friday deals when it came to recently sold out proof Silver Eagles or 25th American Silver Eagle Anniversary Sets.

2011-P American Silver Eagle Reverse Proof Coin

2011-P Reverse Proof Silver Eagles are commanding enormous premiums in the secondary market

With United States Mint sellouts occurring Tuesday, November 22, for the 2011-W American Silver Eagle Proof Coin and on the day of their release, October 27, for the anniversary sets, demand continues to dictate top secondary market prices for these products.

The 100,000 anniversary sets sold by the Mint each went for $299.95. eBay showed nearly 800 auction listings Friday morning when querying the site by the keywords "25th anniversary silver eagle set." Presented results included an array of options from complete sets, to broken out individual coins, to graded and ungraded and more.

Sealed and Unsealed Anniversary Sets

Based on eBay auctions, more value has been assigned to 25th American Silver Eagle Anniversary Sets still within their shipping box. For the most part, secondary market prices have remained steadily high and consistent since their sellout.

Single Sets

Many of the opened single sets had active bidding Friday morning at around $760-$780, or more than two and half times the original United States Mint price. Single anniversary sets still sealed, however, were seeing prices more within the $850 to $900 range.

In looking at a few similar auctions that successfully closed late last week, opened sets were mostly realizing between $720-$780 while those still in their shipping boxes were often sold for $900-$950.

Five Sets

Some sellers have been listing five anniversary sets that are still within shipping boxes. Live auctions Friday morning had prices within a broader range of $3,600 to $4,200 ($720-$840 per set). Similar auctions late last week were realizing $4,000-$4,250 ($800-$850 per set).

Buy It Now

On Friday, most "Buy It Now" prices for Mint sealed boxes containing one set were hovering around the $1,000 range while those outside the box were generally found for $800-$850. For five sets, sealed boxes were available in the area of $4,250-$4,400 ($850-$880 per set).

In looking at similar auctions through last week, typical "Buy It Now" prices for Mint sealed boxes were selling in the $830-$900 range while those outside the box were seeing prices closer to $790-$800. Last week prices for five sets saw a fairly wide spread of between $3,850-$4,500 ($770-$900 per set) with the higher price points seen more toward the end of the week.

Graded Silver Eagle Anniversary Sets

MS70/PF70

Fewer but more coveted auctions appear on eBay for graded anniversary sets. There were more MS70/PF70 sets graded by NGC than from PCGS during the afternoon hours on Friday. Sets that NGC graded at 70 were ranging from $1,700 to $1,800 while those certified by PCGS were more often seen within $1,900 to $2,100. Most of these auctions had up to three hours before the bidding was to end, suggesting higher prices were in the works.

Completed auctions late last week showed several NGC 70 sets going for $2,300-$2,500 while a group of PCGS graded 70 sets realized from $2,700-$3,500.

MS69/PF69

Listings were a bit scarce Friday for auctions with less than five hours to go that included MS69/PF69 graded sets. One auction for a NGC 69 anniversary set was at $831 while another for a PCGS 69 anniversary set was $900. Last week a handful of NGC 69 sets realized prices between $1,025-$1,280 while several PCGS 69 sets went for $1,300-$1,450.

2011-W Proof Silver Eagles, 2011-P Reverse Proof Silver Eagles

This year’s 2011-W Proof Silver Eagles made a successful run having sold out Tuesday with preliminary sales of 950,000 — 850,000 sold by the United States Mint individually and the 100,000 that were included in the 5-coin 25th American Silver Eagle Anniversary Set.

The United States Mint last had the proof Silver Eagles at $58.95. Ungraded coins can still be found for just a bit higher on the secondary market. Graded examples will cost much more. NGC and PCGS coins certified at 70 are finding buyers within the $95-$110 area. 69’s are moving around the $72-$75 level.

Finding good deals on 2011-P Reverse Proof Silver Eagles, however, is another matter. Unique to the anniversary set, many sellers are offering it separately after grading and are making big bucks. Common "Buy It Now" prices on eBay are found at $1,000-$1,300 for those which made the 70 grade. Weaker 69’s can be had for around $500. Bidding is extremely active on any offered.

2011-S Uncirculated Silver Eagles are also unique to the anniversary set. Finding one for purchase outside of the set, however, is a bit of a challenge.
