Silver Prices Tumble 5.3% in London, 5.9% in NY

Weekly Silver UpdateThe week was filled with a series of dark days for precious metals. Silver was the most depressed as prices tripped and then stumbled away from 2009 highs and a four-week winning streak. The metal retreated 5.9% in New York and 5.3% in London.

New York silver futures for December delivery closed Friday at $16.06 an ounce, plunging $1.01 for the week. It was the biggest weekly drop since February.

London silver was hit almost as hard. It sank 91 cents to close at $16.20 an ounce — a far cry from the year’s high of $17.38 reached on Thursday, Sept. 17. The good news is that silver is still up 50% this year when compared to the $10.79 closing price on Dec. 31, 2008.

Silver Prices Continue at 2009 Highs for Third Week of September

Weekly Silver UpdateSilver prices continued to hit new 2009 highs during the third week of September, but stepped back slightly on the final day of trading.

London and New York silver enjoyed weekly gains of 1.3 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively, with both registering four consecutive weeks of advances.

New York silver futures for December delivery closed Friday at $17.07 an ounce, rising 37 cents for the week.

London silver rose 22 cents on the week after a 94 cent advance the week prior which followed a $1.41 gain. It closed Friday at $17.11 an ounce. The metal’s high point of the week, and the year, was $17.38 an ounce on Thursday. London silver is now up $6.32, or 58.6 percent this year as compared to the $10.79 closing price on Dec. 31, 2008.

Silver Prices Surge, Reaching Fresh ’09 Highs in N.Y. and London

Weekly Silver UpdateSilver prices surged to fresh 2009 highs in both London and New York with respective 5.9 percent and 2.5 percent gains, marking a third consecutive week of advances.

New York silver futures for December delivery closed Friday at $16.700 an ounce, rising 41.5 cents for the week. The metal reached a top of $17.015 which was the highest price since Aug. 5, 2008. Silver futures soared $1.47, or 9.9 percent, in New York last week.

London silver surged 94 cents on the week after a $1.41 gain the week prior. The metal was set to the highest point of the year at $16.89 an ounce. London silver is now up $6.10, or 56.5 percent this year as compared to the $10.79 closing price on Dec. 31, 2008.
