US Mint Proof and Uncirculated Silver Coin Demand Retreats
September 16, 2009 by Silver Coins Today
Despite and uptrend in silver prices during the last 2 1/2 weeks, American Eagle Silver Bullion Coin demand appears to be declining in September, according to the latest US Mint stats.
Silver Eagles advanced 450,000 last week. But the newest increase is a mere shadow by comparison with just 150,000 added. A total of 600,000 have been sold in September.
Unless there is a quick turnaround, September could end up as the worst month of the year for the eagles. Contrast that to the 2.13 million eagles sold in August, the most ever for an August month.
Last week's report showed across the board increases in proof and uncirculated silver coins and sets -- above and beyond the prior week's gains. That is not the case with the latest round of data. Every coin and set retreated slightly, with the exception of the uncirculated 2009 Braille Silver Dollar which registered the same 249 in new sales.
2009 Silver Proof Sets increased by 13,311, but that was down from the prior 16,278. A milestone is within reach for the sets. In looking at the numbers, sales are almost certain to top 500,000 before the end of the month. An average of 8,000 a week is all it will take.
The following two tables have the latest US Mint stats for collector silver coins and sets and bullion silver eagles.
