US Mint Coin Sales: Silver Eagles Best Since 1986

US Mint silver coin salesDemand for silver collector products climbed last week, and a new 2010 silver set debuted. Also, American Silver Eagle bullion coins achieved their best May ever and second best month ever, according to the latest United States Mint sales figures.

2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets™ opened to sales of 73,756. The silver sets were released Thursday and the figures run through to Sunday. These are substantially better beginning numbers than last year’s silver quarters set, which came in at 55,160 between their Monday launch to the following Sunday.

2010 Disabled American Veterans Silver Dollar sales have been fluctuating with small ups and downs of late, but ended the month a bit higher. The combined gain was 1,537 which was slightly better than the previous week’s addition of 1,295. Proof versions rose by 1,052 after the last increase had been 820. The uncirculated tacked on another 485, compared to the prior 476. The total DAV proofs reached 141,813 and the uncirculated hit 62,205. Together they account for 58.2 percent of the total maximum mintage allowed by the law that created them.

As each week progresses, the 2010 Boy Scouts of America Silver Dollars get closer a sell out, and as of Sunday, only 2,820 were still available. In this report, sales were slightly down. The proof Boy Scouts coin, which advanced 2,381 last time, rose 2,244 this round. If the momentum continues, the coins will sell out by mid next week at the latest.
The proofs stand at 240,326.

Uncirculated Boy Scout coins, which sold out five weeks ago when their allotted inventory was depleted, continued their downward adjustment. 106,854 was the new total, a shortage of 25 compared to the prior 106,879. No formal explanation for the subtraction has been provided, although the change is likely attributed to cancellations, returns and the processing of standby orders.

The days are numbered for the 18-coin 2009 US Mint Silver Proof Set. 688,031 have been sold, a jump of 2,844 following the last report. It was the highest weekly spike for the set since March. After the deadline for purchases was announced three weeks ago, sales have remained above 2,000 per week. The Mint included the 18-coin set on its "Last Opportunity" web page with a deadline to purchase them until Tuesday, June 15th at 5:00 pm ET.

A few more collectors picked up the 2009 DC and Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set. 697 were purchased, compared to the prior 469. Even though the Mint launched the America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set on May 27, they have continued to sell the 2009 set on their web site. A last opportunity date has not been provided.

Recent bullion American Silver Eagles sales swept May into the second highest ranking sales month in history. An impressive 3,636,500 were purchased by the Mint’s authorized buyers. That number was only 59,500 short of the record 3,696,000 sold in December 1986. June’s numbers began at 509,000. If sales remain high, it may be hard for the Mint to offer collector proof and uncirculated Silver Eagles, something collectors don’t want to miss again. No proof or uncirculated eagles were minted in 2009.
