US Mint Sales: Proof Silver Eagles Outperform, Uncirculated Coin Cools

2011 Proof Silver Eagle

2011 Proof American Silver Eagles enjoyed stronger sales after their return from a suspension

Sales were mixed for the three available versions of American Silver Eagles. Proof Silver Eagles outperformed their sales from the previous round, but demand for the uncirculated coin cooled. Bullion Silver Eagles also weakened.

At the top of the week’s report was the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle with a 3,674 gain, which was a major comeback after falling by -578 in the prior round. The revival can be attributed to the United States Mint resuming its availability just before the weekend, ending a near two-week suspension for repricing.

Continuing the action on the charts was the 2011 Silver Proof Set. Its total was boosted by a 3,450 improvement, and the Gettysburg Five Ounce Uncirculated Silver Coin also got a jolt with a 2,134 surge upon its return. In the previous report, the set only grew by 182 and the five ouncer lost 506 in sales.

Unfortunately, the 2011-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle did not have the same fate. Despite coming back at a lower fare like the proof version, it dived again, and this time by -424. The uncirculated total went from 182,524 previously to 182,100 in this round.

Perhaps the biggest downer, however, was the one-ounce 9/11 Silver Medal from West Point. 1,163 orders have been cancelled or returned, resulting in another retreat just below the 100,000 threshold. Its latest figure rolled back to 99,411. The US Mint has kept its price at $66.95, which makes its premium significant when one ounce of silver on the London Fix has been in the $31 range.

Bullion American Silver Eagles continued to chug along in recent days. The US Mint’s Authorized Purchasers scooped up 868,000 silver coins, moving October’s total up to 1,880,000. The year-to-date tally is resting at 35,2910,500, marking two daily increases in four since a new annual sales record was hit Thursday.
