US Mint Silver Coin Sales Climb, Bullion Eagles Pass 15.8 Million

July 22, 2009 by Darrin Lee Unser

US Mint silver coin sales statsLast week figures had silver coin demand declining across all US Mint offerings with the exception of red-hot silver eagle bullion coins. Not so for recent sales.

Silver eagles continued to dominate, yes, but newly released 2009 Silver Proof Sets soared. And remaining Mint silver products climbed at least modestly.

In coming back to American Eagle Silver Bullion Coins, the US Mint sold 400,000 more from Wednesday to Wednesday. 2,025,000 were purchased in July, bringing the 2009 tally to a record-breaking pace of 15,849,500.

On the collectible side of the picture, 2009 Silver Proof Sets led in the sales board. The sets went on sale last Friday at noon. By Sunday, 271,372 had flown out of the Mint's inventory and into collector's hands.

Finally, in a bit of a surprise, 2008 Silver Proof Set figures remained unchanged from the Mint's last report which had an effective "as of" date of Sunday, July 12. The set went off sale immediately prior to the launch of the 2009 set on Friday, July 17. It would seem logical to see some increase during those few days.

The following two table have the latest US Mint stats for collector silver coins and sets and bullion silver eagles.
