Silver Prices Mark First Week of August with Gains

U.S. silver tracked gold during the first week in August, registering a weekly gain of 46.9 cents after falling 3.8 percent in July.
Gold was lifted by a weaker dollar on Friday as poorer-than-expected jobs data cast shadows on the pace of the economic recovery. Investors sought less risky options, which included gold and silver.
Silver for September delivery advanced 15.1 cents, or 0.8 percent, to end Friday at $18.472 an ounce on the Comex in New York. It was the highest closing point of the week, and capped a 2.6 percent weekly gain. US Mint Sales – Silver Eagles Top 21 Million, Veterans Proof Climb

Sales were mixed for silver coins, breaking a two-week streak where every U.S. Mint silver product increased over the prior week. But there was a stand out in addition to the American Silver Eagle coins that seem to fly out Mint doors 24×7.
One coin did outperformed its prior week’s gain, and that was the proof 2010 Disabled American Veterans Silver Dollar. They advanced 986 compared to the previous gain of 672. The uncirculated tacked on 261, which was slightly lower than 269 from the last report. Together, the two coins increased 1,247. The commemoratives are at 62.8% of their maximum 350,000 mintage. 2010 Proof Silver Eagle Coins Update

The United States Mint may yet be able to strike 2010 American Eagle Silver Proof Coins and 2010 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coins this year, according to recent testimony from U.S. Mint Director Ed Moy before a House subcommittee, but apparently only with the help of the United States Congress.
The news comes as a glimmer of hope to collectors of the numismatic coins which have been missing from the Mint’s product line since late 2008. Silver Prices Retreat in July 2010

U.S. silver marked a third straight day of gains Friday, but it still declined this week which set prices lower for July.
On Friday, silver for September delivery advanced 38.6 cents, or 2.2%, to settle at $18.003 an ounce on the Comex in New York. The metal fell 9.8 cents, or 0.5%, this week. It dropped 70 cents, or 3.8%, in July.
"In the month of July, silver prices witnessed a consolidation phase as the industrial demand for silver remains weak and thus the price has also failed to deliver on high hopes; the price has rather followed the yellow metal’s southwards movement," CommodityOnline opines. "In the near future, silver prices are not looking as weak as the gold prices are, and could revert back after facing a healthy correction."
US Mint Sales: America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets Surge

It was a strong week for silver coins, according to the most recent sales report from the United States Mint. For the second week in a row, every numismatic coin and set outperformed their prior week’s levels. The bullion silver eagles strutted their stuff and the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set tackled its biggest gain since June. Another high climber was the DAV commemoratives.
The US Mint’s authorized purchasers loaded up with bullion American Silver Eagles. They bought 716,500 since the last report, and made July’s total 2,652,000. Right now it will only take 349,000 to match June’s total, and there is still four more business days remaining in the month to get it done. Silver Rises for Week, US Bullion Coins Near 2.3M for Month

U.S. silver slipped 1.9 cents on Friday, but three straight prior day gains lifted the metal higher for the week after prices had tumbled 57.4 cents last Friday and then another 24.5 cents on Monday.
New York silver prices for September delivery closed to $18.101 an ounce, marking a weekly increase of 31.3 cents, or 1.8%. It’s intraday high of $18.280 was hit on Friday while its low of $17.440 occurred on Monday. Read More…
US Mint Sales: Quarters Sets Improve, Silver Eagles Top 20 Million

Numismatic silver coins rebounded, according to the latest figures from the United States Mint. The 2010 silver quarters proof set achieved the biggest comeback, and the DAV commemoratives also climbed.
In fact, every collector coin and set outperformed their prior week’s levels. Perhaps it was the release of the US Mint Uncirculated Mint Set last Thursday, July 15, that drove up the numbers.
