Silver prices plummeted during the holiday shortened first week of June, giving back gains it made in a rallying final week of May.

Demand for silver collector products climbed last week, and a new 2010 silver set debuted. Also, American Silver Eagle bullion coins achieved their best May ever and second best month ever, according to the latest United States Mint sales figures.
2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets™ opened to sales of 73,756. The silver sets were released Thursday and the figures run through to Sunday. These are substantially better beginning numbers than last year’s silver quarters set, which came in at 55,160 between their Monday launch to the following Sunday. Read More…

On May 27th, the United States Mint released the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™. The set includes five proof silver quarter-dollars with the new 2010 reverse themes.
The new 2010 designs are part of the America the Beautiful Quarter™ series that will last until 2021.
Five new coin designs will appear each year. Each coin in the series will feature a design on the reverse side that is emblematic of a selected National Parks or Site found in the US. Read More…
Silver Prices Retreat in May 2010 Despite Rallying Final Week

Silver prices soared this week, but nevertheless declined during the month of May after a 6.4% increase in April.
On Friday, New York silver futures for July delivery fell 4.6 cents, or 0.3, to $18.422 an ounce, capping a 1.2% loss in May. For the week, however, the metal soared 77.1 cents, or 4.4%. Read More…
US Mint Sales – Bullion Silver Eagles Higher, Coins Mixed

Silver Eagle bullion coins outperformed their prior week’s numbers, while numismatic silver products experienced mixed results in the latest statistics from the United States Mint. Only one collector’s item, a 2009 set, was able to improve over the prior numbers. The other five items retreated.
Between the individual silver coins for sale, the proof 2010 Boy Scouts of America Silver Dollars advanced, although the weekly increase was not even close to earlier heights. Collectors scooped up 2,381 proofs, compared to the previous week’s 3,437. The Mint reported the BSA proof total at 238,082. Read More…
5 Star Generals Commemorative Coin Act Passes House, Awaits Senate Action

On Thursday, May 20, 2010 the U.S. House passed the 5 Star Generals Commemorative Coin Act.
The act would create three coins commemorating America’s Five-Star Generals who taught at or attended the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC). If the act becomes law, the United States Mint would begin production on these coins in 2013.
The three coin denominations include clad 50-cent coins, silver one dollar coins, and gold five dollar coins. Maximum mintages would be 750,000 half-dollars, 500,000 silver dollars, and 100,000 five dollar gold coins. Read More…

The Neil/Carter/Contursi specimen 1794 Flowing Hair silver dollar has been sold for $7,850,000, setting a new record as the world’s most valuable rare coin.

Graded PCGS Specimen-66, it is the finest known 1794 dollar and believed by several prominent experts to be the first silver dollar ever struck by the United States Mint.
It was sold by Steven L. Contursi, President of Rare Coin Wholesalers of Irvine, California, to the nonprofit Cardinal Collection Educational Foundation (CCEF) in Sunnyvale, California. Read More…
