US Mint Sales: Silver Products Improve, 2011 Proof Silver Eagles Lead

2011 Proof Silver EagleDespite a couple of lingering annual set suspensions, the majority of United States Mint silver products acquired larger gains over their previous week’s advances, according to the most recent sales report. Exceptions included the Grand Canyon Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, the Medal of Honor uncirculated dollar, and the 2011 Proof Silver Eagles.

2011 Proof Silver Eagles led the sales pack with an addition of 8,944, but that was down from the 10,593 climb in the prior round. A slowdown was expected though, as its price increased by $8.50 on August 29 to $68.45. They have also been on sale for about nine weeks now, which means many collectors have already made their purchase. At last count, the total amount of proof Silver Eagles sold was 735,865.

The uncirculated Medal of Honor Silver Dollar which unexpectedly jumped by 1,562 in the previous report had a milder increase of 389 in this report.

The last US Mint product with weakened sales was the Grand Canyon Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. Given that it officially sold out last Wednesday, smaller sales were expected. Its latest count moved up 110 compared to 620 previously. With a new total of 27,884, expectations are for cuts to follow in order to bring them toward a 27,000 mintage.

West Point produced 9/11 Silver Medals remained popular. They surged 3,274 after advancing 437 in the last round. The Philadelphia strike leaped as well, rising 1,877 against the previous decline of 19.

Two other gainers worth mentioning were the 2010 Silver Proof Set and 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set. They have been "temporarily unavailable" per the US Mint since Friday, September 2. Still, before their suspensions collectors picked up 490 of the silver proof sets and 954 of the quarter sets.

As for the bullion market, September is looking a little sleepy compared to the first week of earlier months. So far, the Mint’s Authorized Purchasers network has ordered 175,000 Silver Eagles in the first eight days of the month. That is drastically slower than the previous month, when they purchased 1,039,000 bullion Silver Eagles by August 8.
